making and doing berlin #2 (the halloween edition)

oh halloween! i love you. why are you only once a year?

well, since you only come once a year we may as well make the best of it. we got together on thursday to work on our costumes and i'm quite proud of us. unfortunately, i was too busy making and didn't take the time to take many pictures. but here are a few of my costume in progress, plus a couple from the party.

side a of my mix tape.

side b

steffi made a super awesome chinese good luck cat. i was quite pleased with how my mix tape turned out. so, to answer your inevitable question: yes, it is exactly to scale. what kind of nerd do you take me for? it was definitely one of those projects that was supposed to be quick and easy and then escalated into a 12 hour craft project. the best part of my costume was the portable speaker system built in with my ipod playing the appropriate mix. any guesses for the first song on side A?.... of course it was "thriller". although, the ghostbusters theme song was a big hit with the other passengers on the u-bahn (subway). see full mix below.

patrick made this killer ("killer" in both senses of the word) mask

maja also did an amazing job on her zombie prom queen costume and natha put together a great bloody mary costume. kudos.

making and doing berlin #1

we had our first ever make stuff/do stuff berlin edition last week. while i miss my stash of supplies back in vancouver, we had a very successful crafty afternoon.

this is my little ipod touch pouch. it needs a little decoration, but that will come later. the little white portion is a thinner piece of fabric that allows the play/pause, forward, and backward buttons to be pushed without taking the ipod out of the pouch.

i made this frame with steffi's dad last week. it's the first step in being able to screen print here in berlin.

måking and døing

this is a special travel edition of the blog. i was in malmö, sweden and spent a few days staying with my friend ken and his girlfriend karin. karin makes some amazing stuff and has an incredible collection of supplies and machines (i.g. yarn, thread, fabric, sewing machine + serger, knitting machine). she makes these really cool birds:

and bees:

ken and i spent an evening drinking colorado beer and making toques and swedish souvenirs from scrap fabric:

before the hate mail starts rolling in from my swedish fan base, i want to acknowledge that i'm aware "ø" is not actually in the swedish alphabet, but it looks very scandinavian and is more fun than the "ö".
